Receptive Language

Receptive language is the understanding of language that is heard and read by your child. 

How do I know if my child is experiencing difficulties in this area?

• Difficulty following simple directions
• May understand stories that are read to them, but won’t be able to provide a simple explanation
• A limited vocabulary compared to their peers
• Difficulty learning new words
• Says “um” often when talking and uses certain words and phrases over and over again
• Not very talkative and has fewer conversational skills than peers
• Confuses verb tense and leaves out keywords
• Is easily frustrated by the inability to communicate an idea or thought
• Sentences don’t make a lot of sense
